Certified purity and potency

NSF International certifies that our Sockeye Salmon Oil provides the omega-3 levels stated on the label and meets strict U.S. and international safety standards. Wild Alaskan sockeye salmon are among the purest of all ocean fish, according to the EPA, FDA, and independent scientists.

Storage

Refrigerate after opening. The Salmon Oil will remain fresh for 90 days after opening the bottle IF the bottle is immediately recapped and refrigerated after each use.

Releasing your pump

Pumps arrive in a “locked” position within the white collar that screws onto the bottle.

To release it fully for pumping, follow these steps:

Hold the pump in your left hand.
Wrap your thumb and forefinger around the collar and hold it firmly.
With your right hand, push down on the top of the pump dispenser and, while maintaining pressure, rotate it counter-clockwise.
The pump should release and spring up after a few twists.
Once released, it can then be inserted into a bottle for pumping.

NOTE: Our Salmon Oil will become cloudy when refrigerated or frozen, but this is no cause for concern. (For more, see "Cloudy Fish Oil Myth", below.)

Daily Dose

The recommended dosage for healthy adults is 3/4 teaspoon daily or as recommended by a health care professional.

This advice is based on intake recommendations from authoritative scientific bodies.

It is best to take Salmon Oil with a meal. If you experience excessive occurrences of fishy burps, try our lemon-flavored Salmon Oil.

CAUTIONS:

Salmon oil should be taken at the recommended dose. Consult with your physician before taking substantially higher doses, or taking this product if you are pregnant, diabetic, allergic to fish or iodine, using blood thinners, have a diagnosed cardiac condition or immune disorder, or anticipate surgery.

Omega-3s for Mothers, Infants, and Children

Here is what widely respected pediatrician William Sears, M.D. told us in respose to our question on this subject:

•

"... experts attending

a 2005 workshop recommended at least 300 mg a day for pregnant and nursing mothers (most mothers get only 20-25% of this amount, unless they take omega-3 fish oil supplements). In our medical practice we have mothers take at least 500 mg of DHA per day during pregnancy and lactation."

•

"The recommendation for infants is at least 200mg of DHA per day, which is the dosage added to infant formulas."

•

Practically speaking, infants under one year old receive their omega-3s through mother's milk or fortified formula, but it is perfectly safe and perhaps even beneficial for infants to be given extra Vital Choice fish oil at a dose of around 300 mg a day of DHA. I stress DHA rather than EPA because DHA is the main brain growth omega 3."

NOTE: There are as yet no official omega-3 intake recommendations for children over two years of age, so please consult your pediatrician. A dose of 300 mg of DHA would be provided by 1 teaspoon of our Liquid Salmon Oil, 8 of our 500 mg Salmon Oil capsules, 4 of our 1000 mg capsules.

CAUTION: If your child has never had fish or fish oil, please check for seafood allergies (which are uncommon) by rubbing some Salmon Oil on his or her skin, in a less sensitive area such as the lower leg.

A Cloudy Fish Oil Myth

Our Salmon Oil will become cloudy if refrigerated or frozen, and this is no cause for concern. Makers of some highly refined, distilled fish oils assert, disingenuously, that if a fish oil becomes cloudy when cold this means it is not as pure or efficiacious as an oil that remains clear when cold. But if a fish oil becomes cloudy when cold this simply means that it retains some of the shorter chain fatty acids -- including small amounts of saturated fatty acids -- that occur naturally in fish.

In fact, most of what we know about the myriad health benefits of omega-3 fish oils comes from studies involving consumption of whole fish, which, like our Salmon Oil, contain small amounts of saturated fatty acids, which, in any case, are perfectly heart-healthful, according to the current scientific consensus.

Fish oils and blood thinners

The omega-3s in fish oil possess properties associated with “blood thinning”, but according to research by American Heart Association (AHA) consultant William Harris, Ph.D., they do not appear to pose any risk to persons taking blood-thinning drugs (e.g., Coumadin).

This week has been a tenuous one to say the least. It started out with the information that a family member was in a serious accident. That situation is good from the aspect that it wasn't fatal.

So too lifes' trials and tribulations, of which we all must encounter and endure, do overlap into our business lives as well.The business continues to take positive steps, which in this ongoing slow economic recovery is much appreciated.

The blips along the way of business irritations and inconveniences this week saw-ghosts and goblins with my websites admin area, i.e finding out in a back handed and totally circumvent way from normal about orders received at my website.

This combined with lots of ethereal situations in my private sector job-too, made for a long week.

Having said that, I was again fortunate to welcome aboard three more new clients, and repeat orders from existing clients were brisk.

Skin diseases are one of the most common reasons pet owners seek out information about my products at my website

I am a huge proponent of gathering important information that hopefully will assist in the diagnosis of a problem.

I AM NOT A VETERINARIAN AND I DO NOT PLAY ONE ON TELEVISION

However, I am a lifelong pet owner, and I have been providing pet healthcare products well in excess of a decade-so it is in the eyes of the beholder as to the viability of my advice.

There are many potential factors to be considered when dealing with pet skin issues, i.e., breed, age, gender, overall health and any behavioral or environmental changes are important facts that can assist when attempting to offer advice for the proper diagnosis.

It is important to understand that if a pet has a skin disease, there is often an underlying cause that has nothing to do with the skin.

The skin is acting as a portal to signal that something else is wrong.

It is important to take your pets to a veterinarian for consultation regarding a treatment of the symptoms...i.e. sores, bumps, lesions, etc., and even more important, to determine and treat the underlying cause so the sores etal do not recur.

I obviously do offer holistic products that are beneficial to the ultimate treatment, but knowing the proper diagnosis up front facilitates us both, the pet owner and myself, to best serve as a suggested remedy.

Again,MOST skin issues are telling us that there probably is an abnormality in the body that needs to be treated. If we do not know the cause, some treatments might make things worse.

This is an extremely important concept, which I hope will help the pet owner to better understand the problem. A few of the things that can cause skin lesions are related most assuredly to overall skin condition.

The skin, which is the largest organ of the body, has only a few limited responses to a wide variety of causes. For example, a pet with hypothyroidism - low thyroid levels (Kennel Kelp is indeed an excellent treatment here) - may have skin problems very similar to those of a pet with diabetes or "hyperadrenocorticism"= another hormonal imbalance in pets.

This only re-enforces the point that if we don't know the cause, we can't offer proper advice for the CORRECT PRODUCT to treat the disease effectively.

If there are no underlying metabolic or hormonal problems, the most common cause of skin irritation in most pets is Usually external parasites, i.e. fleas.

A very large contingent of pets contract a condition called Flea Allergy Dermatitis - FAD. These pets are extra sensitive to fleas and display an overly exaggerated response to flea bites. One flea bite can cause an allergic reaction in a FAD pet. The conundrum here can be that there are no visible signs of fleas, however, believe it or not, there still is a possibility that fleas are the cause. Tell tale signs of flea allergies can include itching over the hips and tail area, the abdomen, and inside the rear legs and armpits.

The flea injects saliva when it bites the pet, and flea saliva is both a anticoagulant as well as a protein. The problem is the protein from the saliva can often remain in the pets system for a few weeks, and if the pet is allergic to this protein, intense itching can result. If FAD is the culprit, sometimes a good flea powder might be the solution?.

If a pet breaks the skin through constant itching, more medication will be absorbed than would be in a comparison to the skin of an already healthy pet. This is why one should consult their vet, as now you are entering a veterinarians jocular lingo and terminology arena.

One common misconception can be that the condition is the result of food allergies. Food allergies can most certainly be the cause, and convential wisdom estimates that those percentages are approximately somewhere between 10-40% .

Again I am Not A Veterinarian, but I have seen this be the case in both some of my clients pets, as well as some of my own pets over the years. Some common symptoms of food allergies may include facial itching, feet licking and feet biting/chewing, and possibly some form of chronic ear infections.

There is no "one magic diet" that fits all pets with allergies. It can be a very complicated, tedious, and yes sometimes expensive process to determine which diet is the best for ones pet. Another type of allergy is Atopy, an allergy contributable both to heredity and environmental allergens, molds, pollens, grasses, weeds and trees, usually inhaled through the respiratory tract. Atopic pets generally show symptoms beginning after the first year of a pets life.

The symptoms can be propagated by the change of seasons, and can also be re-occurring . The best analysis can be determined from blood work done by a vet. Since this is a condition that can be passed on to off springs, some pet owners may opt for the pet to be spayed or neutered?

Regardless of the cause, skin irritations have a high potential for secondary bacterial and/or yeast infection. Any secondary infections will need to be treated as well as the cause. Your vet may very well be treating two separate conditions.

One treatment for the cause of the lesions - sores, and the second treatment, a therapeutic treatment to soothe the lesions resulting from the primary cause.

Medications to control itching can help improve the pets quality of life. Gentle hypoallergenic shampoos also can help to reduce the allergens and improve overall skin health. How I Comb My Cat's Belly

My two cats are amenable to having their shoulders and backs combed, but they are a tad resistant when I attempt combing their bellies. However, gunk, dirt, mats, and other undesirable things can accumulate on their bellies just as they can on other parts of their bodies. So I do comb in that area.

Here's one approach that works with my two cats for belly-combing. I start in their favorite areas, head, face shoulders, and tail. I then gently grip their shoulders, rolling them on their side first, combing there also, and then rolling them on their backs; to expose their bellies. We have developed a trusting and caring relationship, and they like my products and grooming sprays.

Recap of MY Process that works for me and my two boys!

1. I start the combing session by concentrating on places that they most like to be combed, such as their forehead, back, and upper sides. A few (or more) chin scratches are mixed in to enhance the coaxing procedure.

2. When it's time to venture into the belly area, I sit or kneel on the floor right behind my cats, continuing with some gentle combing, and placing my hand on my cat's upper chest-lower neck area, as sort of a gentle brace. I have been accused of being odd, but I do talk to them as well-one of the beauties of being old myself, I don't care if people chuckle.The idea for me is to have everyone be calm, relaxed, and secure.

3. I place my hand off of their upper chest-lower neck, and position my forearm under my cats, just in back of their front legs, up against their belly. Again, I continue to talk to them letting them know my approach to the belly is coming and I will be combing their tummies, by giving a brief announcement, "Give me your belly." I always use this phrase just before combing their bellies. Consistency and predictability are important in my process.

4. I lift the front part of my cats up with their back paws remaining firmly on the floor—and I start to comb their bellies. I always let them dictate how long or short the combing sessions will be. Through repetition this has become easier and less tedious and tumultuous Eventually—especially if you and your cat have a friendly rapport—the chances are good that she'll feel comfortable enough to let you comb and brush her tummy, and she may even grow to like it.

I found that experimenting with different types of combs and brushes, worked best. Each one works a little differently in terms of how it traps fur, picks up gunk, stimulates the skin, and so forth—and perhaps most importantly, every cat has different tastes.

I have had clients , especially mushers, who in the past have had experiences with their respective

sled dogs regarding coat funk, AKA alopecia. Coat funk is a condition often found in malamutes and other breeds, to include Pomeranians, Samoyeds, and Keeshounds. In the case of malamutes, it appears the condition can be traced to the breeds ancestry.

Coat funk causes both the top coat and undercoat to become brittle and loose, with a large degree of frequency of hair falling out, thus leaving bare spots. These spots do

not necessarily cause itching or apparent discomfort in the dogs. The bare skin can turn black, and is susceptible to sunburn, frostbite, and other skin abrasions and irritations.

Symptoms can vary, and sometimes can have common characteristics of other afflictions, i.e Cushings, hypothyroid, and others. Having the pet tested by your vet is a best suggestion to see if these other diseases are the culprit.Usually, if the condition worsens, it is ultimately coat funk!

one, thanks to a wide variety of formulations, price points and health claims with strong proponents on either side. As always, your veterinarian should be the last word on your pet's nutritional needs.

When it comes to convenience and affordability, some pet owners say dry food beats wet food. Dry food is less messy, easier to measure, and can sit out all day without going bad.

It’s not only cheaper per pound but also more energy dense than canned food. This is because dry food is usually about 10% water as compared with about 75% water in canned rations.

It takes a much larger volume of canned food to supply the nutrients your pet needs. So while an exclusive wet-food diet might be fine for a small pet, a large pet might have trouble meeting his or her energy needs on canned food alone. Not to mention the cost and bulk of so many cans. For larger pets, a diet made primarily or exclusively of dry food usually makes the most sense. It’s not surprising that dry diets make up the vast majority of pet foods.

Palatability

Canned-food diets are often more palatable than comparable dry diets. While manufacturers boost the taste appeal of dry kibble by coating it with tempting fats, gravy, and other flavorings, it’s hard to compete with the delectable aroma from a freshly opened can. Texture plays a large part too. Better palatability is a distinct advantage for a picky eater. But for an over eater, extra tasty food may pack on the pounds, making portion control all the more important.

Grain: the great debate.

Commercial dry foods are formulated with higher proportions of grain and grain-based products than their canned counterparts. Grain elements such as corn, wheat and rice are necessary for binding the formula into pellets and improving the texture. Grains such as corn, wheat and soy also can partially replace meat as a protein source, thereby trimming cost.

Intense debate wages over whether the ubiquitous grains in dry food belong in a dog’s

diet. Natural food advocates assert that dogs are carnivores that have no metabolic need for plant matter in their food.Others, including those in the pet food industry, assert that wild dogs are scavengers that regularly supplement their meat diet with grasses, berries, roots and other vegetable matter, not to mention the digested plant matter they inadvertently consume along with their herbivorous prey.

Deciphering the Pet Food Label

Look on the side of back of the bag or can for the list of ingredients. Ingredients are named in descending order by weight.

* A quality diet should list a meat source (such as beef, chicken, lamb meal) as one of the first two ingredients—or ideally, two of the top three.

* If grains are used, look for whole grains (i.e. whole grain corn, whole grain barley) and not cheaper by-products (corn gluten meal, soybean meal).

* Newer ultra-premium diets avoid grains altogether in favor of carb sources like white or sweet potato.

* Avoid artificial colors (such as FD&C Red #3), preservatives (such as BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin), and sweeteners (sucrose, high fructose corn syrup).

* Choose a diet that complies with AAFCO specifications and conducts feeding trials. The label will say: Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that (name of product) provides complete and balanced nutrition.

While one option might be to avoid commercial dry foods altogether, another is to take a more critical look at labels. The box at right offers some tips for decoding the ingredients list and making better choices. Better ingredients mean greater cost but also more wholesome nutrition for your pet.

Dental health benefits

Conventional wisdom has it that dry food is better the teeth than wet food. Wet food, it’s thought, promotes plaque buildup whereas dry food cleanses the teeth as the animal chews. In fact it’s more complicated.

While canned food does leave a gooey residue (known as plaque), dry foods can certainly do the same. Just peek in your pooch’s mouth right after breakfast and you’ll see what gets left behind. Plaque eventually hardens, causing tartar buildup and dental disease. Several scientific studies in the mid-nineties actually showed that dogs fed conventional dry food did not have better dental health than those eating a canned food diet.

Since then, a handful of dental diets have come on the market with scientific proof behind them. These foods are specially formulated with a tough pellet that scrapes off some plaque as the dog bites down. A current list of proven dental-friendly foods can be found on the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) website.

In any case, your dog’s dental health boils down to a healthy diet, along with routine home care and periodic professional treatments by your veterinarian.

That should give both you and your pet something to chew on.

Semi-moist foods:

They're chewier than dry food, but not as mushy as canned. They're packaged in bags or pouches for easy storage and dispensing. They don't spoil once opened so can be free-fed. Disadvantages include

an increased level of additives such as preservatives, sweeteners, and artificial colors. Because of this, they've fallen out of favor as a staple diet but still have some utility as snacks, treats, or to bridge the gap between canned and dry food for a pet with special dietary issues.
